The Plum Tree

The Plum Tree

I missed the blooming of the plum tree this year
I only noticed the plums when
They emerged in velvet red/purple attire,
So many party goers at some grand ball
I didn’t notice them in their small, green beginnings.
I skipped over what they were, to what they became

I feel the press of words at my throat
I labor over them, try to sweep a jumble into
Something so lovely, so sweet
That you will taste it in the words
But the ends seem to matter more than the means
And
We only see the plums when they are red
